Waiting for morning PDF Print E-mail
Written by Yusuff Busayo Olamiposi

The thumping hadn’t ceased. Not when it had climaxed to a gruesome migraine. She had hoped he’d be home before now. It was growing dark.  He hadn’t left any word to prove that he’ll be staying out this late. Her heart throbbed alongside. She couldn’t bear to imagine what will happen if he turned his back on the hurting marriage. She clenched to her heart as thoughts of the morning’s occurrence flooded her mind.

What had she said wrong? Wasn’t it normal or right that she asked the questions? But which one of them stirred his anger? Her back fully rested on the chair where she lay, she glared at the wall clock as it ticked away. Night had crept in. No light shone outside. The moon was shielded by dark clouds. Was it going to rain? It better not! Her husband was still out there. Somewhere.

She tossed and turned on the chairs, sleep wasn’t coming. She was wide awake. The night would be cold. She could tell. Colder for her it’ll be if he didn’t walk through that door. The wind blew softly now. It made the door creak on its rusty hinges. She stood up, her legs trembling, and closed it. 10:30pm. He certainly wasn’t considering letting her live through this night alone. He hadn’t done it before. He wouldn’t be that harsh.

Regardless of what may have transpired between them in the morning, he’ll definitely not concede to letting her sleep alone. But where in the world was he? At work? No! He leaves work by 5:00pm. She’d considered calling him only to find out that he left his phone behind, when he bolted out in anger. 10:49pm. Her eyelids were giving way. She dozed uncontrollably. Try as much as could, she couldn’t keep her swollen eyes from flickering shut intermittently. Hence, she stood to pace the floor.

Back and forth as her throbbing legs could carry her she paced. She’d made to sit awhile when her phone vibrated. Then a loud ring followed. Her tired hands lounged for it. Quickly, she punched the green key, not minding who could be calling at this late hour.  A female voice came from the  other end.

‘Hello’

‘Hello’, she replied hesitantly.

‘Am I on to Mrs. Lee?’

‘Yes’

The caller waited.

‘Are you sure this is Mrs. Lee?’

‘Yes, it’s her’, her voice was raised now.

The caller had successfully started her blood running. Chills of anger lined her face.

‘Well ‘cos the man here told me he’d be asleep by now.’

‘Which man is that?’ her tone calm and pleading.

‘He’s dark, tall with neatly shaved moustache….’

‘That’s my husband!’ she snapped.

‘Guess so ‘cos he kept calling your name’

‘What’s he doing there?’ She was angry an suspicious now. Had the morning’s happening prompt him to go sleep in a woman’s place.  By far, she wished she could see the caller now. She’d strangle her for ever thinking of sleeping with her man.

‘Well he….he….se…’ the caller stammered.

‘Speak up you flirtatious whore!’She yelled.

‘Well madam, he’s not sleeping. Neither am I a whore. I’m a doctor. I just called to tell you that your husband died some minutes ago.’ And the line clicked.
